Billy Joel was born and raised on Long Island N.Y., adjacent to New York City. He moved into the Overlook house in the mid 1970’s, after returning to New York from Los Angeles, where he had lived for four years (According to www.songfacts.com). When he arrived back in New York, he boarded a bus to Highland Falls, where he had rented the house. While aboard the bus, Joel started writing the song, “New York State of Mind” in a notebook. When he finally got to Overlook, he went to the piano and finished the music and lyrics in an hour.
